Dre Meller, AMFT

Welcome!

I'm Dre and I'm a total nerd and recovering perfectionist. I'm glad you found me and our paths have crossed. Finding a therapist can feel daunting and I hope reading through this helps you decide if I'm a good fit for you.

We all have a story to tell and the things that have happened, or didn't happen that should have happened, shape our experiences. I work in a way that supports my clients in unpacking their stories and helping them to lighten the burden. We are often made to believe we are not good enough or don't have what we need to heal. I help clients recognize and uncover their truth and reconnect with their core self. It is not a quick and easy process. Every person has their own timeline and desire for how long they would like to be in therapy.

My work supports naming oppressive structures and systemic harms. I am not here to “fix” you and don't work from a medical model. I help normalize the emotional responses to a system that isn't working for many of us. My most used phrase in sessions is, “of course” or “that makes a lot of sense to me.” I stay present with my clients and work in ways that are affirming. I work with the goals you have for yourself or changes you would like to see.

As a white, neurodivergent, gender non-conforming, queer, non-religious, working-class person, I recognize my intersectionality and how that impacts the therapeutic process. I bring a lot of personal insight and self-awareness to my practice.

My practice is collaborative, eclectic, and creative. I tend to use metaphor and humor as a part of my practice. I am trauma-aware, intuitive, and inquisitive. My style is accepting and curious, so I ask questions to understand patterns and the meaning of things. When working with groups, I take a direct approach to help folks see patterns or point out things I see. I work from an integrative lens with all my clients. Consent is important to me as a clinician. I work with clients to create the path in therapy. While I may have a lot of schooling and training, I honor that you bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise of your lived experience.

I can offer a lot of different modalities but my most frequent interventions stem from narrative, family systems, and parts work. I am trained in Comprehensive Resource Modeling (CRM), EMDR, Brainspotting, EFT, IFS, and Gottman. I tend to draw from different relational, attachment-based, and trauma-aware models.

I love helping people in their relationships with others. I work with a variety of relationships from families, polycules, queer, hetero, romantic, friends, co-workers, etc. I am sex-positive and kink-allied. My goal is to affirm my clients and listen to understand. I appreciate working with interpersonal chaos and can help people find their way to deeper understanding and connection.

Working with trauma is familiar and comfortable for me. I work from a place of non judgment and harm reduction. I understand the process of working with trauma on a personal level so I know the vulnerability involved. I work with clients and their nervous systems in a balanced way. Too much, too fast can be activating, so I help clients with regulation during the process. Though trauma work can be restimulating, I help clients feel internally resourced to minimize flooding. I see trauma work as a dance.

Background
Pronouns: they/them

I graduated from Touro University Worldwide with an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2024. I also have an MA in Human Development and Social Change from Pacific Oaks College and a BA in Studio Art from Temple University. Before my BA, I spent almost a decade at the community college exploring a lot of different things from sign language to psychology. I'm a first-generation college graduate and a high school dropout. My educational and work background is eclectic, like me!

I completed my practicum hours at Liberation Institute in SF and Life Source in Riverside. Both offer affordable therapy options to marginalized communities.

In addition to the therapy world, I have over 15+ years of experience as a social emotional educator. I have worked in K-12 schools, colleges, and nonprofits. A lot of my past experiences have taught me what not to do as a human. Working in oppressive systems has created a sense of compassion for others and their experiences. I care a lot about equity and justice, especially in the fields of education and therapy.

I'm an East Coaster who ventured West about 20 years ago. Growing up on the East Coast in a working-class area in the 80s taught me about resilience. Venturing West away from my family allowed me to begin a journey within. My experience is well-rounded and one I've approached with a deep sense of curiosity.

I live in Sonoma County with my partner, kids, and dog. I love hanging out at the beach, hiking, and exploring new places. My interests include creating art, hanging out with animals, bird watching, yoga, meditation, weight lifting, roller skating, dancing, drag, and making house music. I love a good beat!

If you have any questions about myself or my style, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
